The Potters climbed out of the relegation zone in a dramatic fashion thanks to a 1-0 win over a lackluster Manchester City last week. A headed goal from James Beattie gave Stoke all three points and took them to the 17th place on the table with 24 points from 24 games. The only blip in an otherwise perfect game was the sending off of Rory Delap.
Manager Tony Pulis will be delighted with the win and will hope that the new signings accomplished during January will add to the team's strength. Pulis has brought in Henri Camara on loan from Wigan and is on the verge of signing up Birmingham defender Stephen Kelly. The arrival of Matthew Etherington and Beattie has also added to the attacking options at Pulis' disposal and fans will hope they do enough to stay up at the end of the season.
Sunderland meanwhile have continued their impressive run under interim boss Ricky Sbragia with a 1-1 draw in the Tyne-Wear derby last week. Djibril Cisse scored the opener only for Shola Ameobi to equalize for the Magpies.
The good news for Sbragia is that goalkeeper Craig Gordon is fit once again, but there is bad news in the form of injuries to Anton Ferdinand and Teemu Tainio. The squad has also been depleted by the departures of Pascal Chimbonda and El Hadj Diouf to Tottenham and Blackburn respectively.
