Manchester City only had themselves to blame as they went down 1-0 to Stoke City in their last league game. The Citizens put in a lackluster performance against a highly motivated Stoke side, who grabbed all three points courtesy of a James Beattie header in the first half. The Potters were reduced to 10 men after Rory Delap was sent off, but still managed a win in front of home fans. The loss leaves Man City on the 10th spot with 28 points from 24 games.
Manager Mark Hughes has added to his side in the January transfer window brining in Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. However Brazilian striker Jo has been allowed to leave on a loan to Everton till the end of the season. Hughes has also failed to land Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn although he was successful in bringing Craig Bellamy to the City of Manchester Stadium.
Meanwhile Middlesbrough sank deeper into the relegation quagmire after they were humbled 2-0 by Chelsea. That game was followed by a 0-0 draw against fellow relegation battlers Blackburn. The draw did neither team a favor as they both continue to languish in the bottom three. Boro have 22 points from 24 games and need some points desperately if they are to survive in top flight football at the end of the season.
Manager Gareth Southgate will hope his side can win this one. He has managed to hold onto winger Stewart Downing, but Egyptian striker Mido has left on a loan to Wigan, while Marlon King has moved in the opposite direction. This season’s reverse fixture was clinched 2-0 by Boro with Afonso Alves and O’Neil finding the net.
